Emergency BNP meeting on to finalize presidential candidate

Dhaka: The ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has held an emergency meeting to finalize its candidate for the country’s 23rd presidential election.

The meeting began at around 9:00am on Thursday at the Bangladesh Secretariat, chaired by Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman.

Top and senior BNP leaders are attending the meeting. The party is expected to finalize the country’s next president at today’s meeting, after which it will submit the nomination papers to the Election Commission.

The presidential election is scheduled to be held on August 20 to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of former President Mohammed Shahabuddin.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A.M.M. Nasir Uddin has called a special session of Parliament for the election. Voting will take place in the Parliament chamber from 2:00pm to 5:00pm that day.
