Flood situation worsens in several parts of Bangladesh

13 August 2026 11:19 Updated: 13 August 2026 11:19

The flood situation has deteriorated in several parts of Bangladesh as heavy rainfall and upstream runoff have pushed up water levels in major rivers, according to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) of the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB).

In a bulletin issued Thursday (August 13), the FFWC said water in several rivers was flowing above danger levels, inundating low-lying areas and causing suffering for residents.

The Kushiyara River at Fenchuganj in Sylhet and the Khowai River at Balla point in Habiganj were flowing above their danger levels, according to the latest observations. Water has entered low-lying areas in both regions, disrupting normal life.

The FFWC, analysing forecasts from weather agencies, said moderate to heavy rainfall is likely in Dhaka, Sylhet, Mymensingh and Chattogram divisions over the next three days.

A low-pressure system has formed over the North Bay and adjoining coastal areas and could intensify further. As a result, water levels in the Gomti, Muhuri, Feni, Halda and Sangu rivers in Chattogram Division may rise.

Northeastern region: Water levels in the Surma and Kushiyara basins are showing a declining trend but remain above danger levels. The improvement is expected to continue over the next three days.

Ganges-Padma basin: Water levels are rising and may continue to do so over the next five days, although they are currently forecast to remain below danger levels.

Brahmaputra-Jamuna basin: Water levels are gradually falling, with the trend likely to continue for the next five days.

The FFWC has urged residents in vulnerable areas, particularly those living in low-lying riverbank communities, to remain alert and take necessary precautions to protect lives and property.

Authorities have also advised residents to follow the BWDB’s daily flood bulletins for the latest updates.

The disaster management authorities and local administrations are closely monitoring the situation and have taken necessary preparations to respond to any further deterioration.
