Former State Minister for Home Affairs Sohel Taj has said that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her family are proof that “one person’s ego and arrogance can destroy a country and a political party.”
In a post on his verified Facebook page on Saturday (July 4), Sohel Taj alleged that the Awami League had “committed genocide, enforced disappearances, killings and corruption, buried democracy, misused the spirit of the Liberation War, and betrayed the country and its people.”
The former state minister further alleged that after “destroying the country,” the party fled in the face of the student-led mass uprising and laundered “hundreds of billions of taka” abroad through corruption and looting.
He also claimed that while “sitting atop that mountain of money,” the party was now talking about returning to politics, describing it as “another act of hypocrisy” that would put ordinary Awami League leaders and activists at risk.
Sohel Taj said the Awami League was unlikely to return to mainstream politics in the near future unless it engaged in self-criticism and introspection.
