Laos has expressed interest in recruiting workers from Bangladesh, with the issue discussed at the first-ever Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) between the two countries in Vientiane on Thursday.

The Bangladeshi delegation was led by Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam, while Laos was represented by its Deputy Foreign Minister Anouparb Vongnorkeo.

The two sides discussed signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on labour cooperation to facilitate the recruitment of Bangladeshi workers.

Bangladesh is expected to send a draft MoU on manpower export to Laos soon.

The FOC also covered trade and investment, human resource development, ICT, healthcare, eco-tourism, consular cooperation, higher education and diplomatic training.

Both sides agreed to explore greater cooperation in tourism and cultural exchanges.

Bangladesh also requested Laos to ease visa procedures for Bangladeshi ordinary passport holders, to which the Lao side responded positively.

The two countries further agreed to strengthen bilateral trade and economic ties, with Laos showing particular interest in deeper cooperation with Bangladesh in pharmaceuticals and agricultural products.

The meeting concluded with the heads of the two delegations signing an outcome document.
