The mayor of Faizabad, the capital of Afghanistan’s Badakhshan province, was killed in a bomb attack on Thursday, according to hospital and municipal sources.
Abdul Rahman Mansour was killed when an explosion targeted his vehicle, reports by Afghanistan International and Geo News said.
A nurse at Badakhshan Provincial Hospital said the mayor was killed in a bomb blast. A municipal employee, speaking on condition of anonymity for security reasons, said a bomb planted near their workplace exploded, killing the mayor.
Earlier, Zabiullah Amiri, head of Badakhshan’s Information and Culture Department, was shot dead while travelling to Faizabad. Daesh-Khorasan, also known as ISIS-K, claimed responsibility for that killing, which occurred about three weeks ago.
Badakhshan has emerged as an important centre for mineral extraction since the Taliban returned to power. Over the past five years, Taliban authorities have focused on expanding the province’s mining sector.
Despite the Taliban’s pledge to restore security after taking power in 2021, sporadic attacks have continued across Afghanistan. Daesh-Khorasan has claimed responsibility for several of them.
In January this year, the group claimed responsibility for a blast at a Chinese restaurant in central Kabul that killed at least seven people. It also claimed responsibility for the December 2024 suicide bombing that killed Afghanistan’s refugee minister, Khalil Ur-Rahman Haqqani, in Kabul.
