Public interest will be given the highest priority in amending the Cyber Protection Act, announced State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yaser Khan Chowdhury. Highlighting the necessity to prevent misuse of the law, he mentioned that a high-level committee is actively reviewing ways to strengthen its effectiveness.
The State Minister made these remarks while addressing a discussion titled “Measures Regarding Misleading Information and Smear Campaigns on Social Media”, held at the Mymensingh Deputy Commissioner’s office on Thursday night, 13 August 2026.
State Minister Yaser Khan Chowdhury said, “We are working on amending the Cyber Protection Act. A high-level committee has been formed for this purpose. Special focus is being placed on the cyber safety of women and children. Many people suffer mental distress due to cyberbullying, defamation, and smear campaigns on social media. Necessary provisions will be incorporated addressing these concerns.” He added that widespread public consultation will take place before finalizing the legislation.
Reiterating support for freedom of expression, he noted that there are no barriers to criticizing the government. “Anyone can criticize the government, and no action will be taken even if someone builds a narrative against us, as it is part of freedom of speech and media freedom. However, anti-state acts or activities against national sovereignty and public interest will be met through established legal processes.”
To tackle social media abuse, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is collaborating with the Ministry of Education to produce educational videos and reels. These contents will be distributed across schools, colleges, and local media channels.
Chaired by Mymensingh Deputy Commissioner Md Saifur Rahman, the session was addressed by Superintendent of Police Mohammad Kamrul Hasan, District Information Office Director Mir Akram Uddin Ahammad, and Muminunnisa Government Women’s College Principal Khan Md Sajjad Kabir. Following the discussion, the State Minister held an exchange meeting with government officials to review local development initiatives.
