The No. 1 unit of the Barapukuria coal-fired thermal power plant in Dinajpur has been shut down again due to a mechanical fault.
The unit stopped generating electricity at around 11am on Friday (August 14), according to Abu Bakar Siddique, chief engineer of the power plant. Engineers are working to identify and repair the fault and resume generation as soon as possible.
Before the shutdown, the 125-megawatt unit was supplying around 50 megawatts of electricity to the national grid.
The unit had previously been shut down on July 31 due to a mechanical problem and was brought back into operation on August 2 after repairs.
Currently, the plant’s No. 3 unit is operational and supplying around 170 megawatts to the national grid. The No. 2 unit has remained out of operation since 2020.
The Barapukuria power plant has a total generation capacity of 525 megawatts, with Units 1 and 2 having capacities of 125 megawatts each and Unit 3 having a capacity of 275 megawatts.
