Dhaka: Air pollution is increasing at an alarming rate worldwide due to climate change and ongoing development activities. However, according to the latest live data from international air quality monitoring organization IQAir, Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka ranks 24th among the world’s most polluted cities. Dhaka currently has an Air Quality Index (AQI) score of 79, which is considered ‘moderate’ or ‘acceptable’ in terms of air quality.
According to IQAir’s live ranking on Saturday (August 15), Indonesia’s capital Jakarta topped the list of the world’s most polluted cities with an AQI score of 170. Malaysia’s Kuching and India’s Delhi ranked second and third, respectively, with scores of 166 each. The air quality in Manama and Doha was also listed as unhealthy.
According to standard AQI classifications, a score of 0–50 indicates ‘good’ air quality, while 51–100 is considered ‘moderate’ or ‘acceptable.’ A score of 101–150 is classified as ‘unhealthy for sensitive groups,’ and 151–200 as ‘unhealthy.’ Scores between 201 and 300 are considered ‘very unhealthy,’ while scores above 300 are classified as ‘hazardous.’
