The government will open five specialised hospitals for children in Cumilla, Barishal, Khulna, Rangpur and Rajshahi in October as part of efforts to expand quality healthcare beyond major cities, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said Saturday.

He made the announcement after inaugurating a new 500-bed expanded building at the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital in Agargaon, Dhaka. He later visited different departments of the hospital and spoke with officials about facilities and services for patients.

The prime minister said the government was working to ensure that quality healthcare reaches people in remote areas rather than remaining concentrated in urban centres.

“Healthcare is not only a basic right of the people; it is also a key driver of the country’s economic and overall development,” he said, stressing the need to ensure accessible and equitable healthcare for everyone.

Tarique said quality medical treatment should not be limited to wealthy sections of society. He also stressed that compassionate behaviour by doctors toward patients could significantly improve the overall quality of care.

The prime minister further said that if mistrust and insecurity develop among doctors, patients and their relatives, government initiatives would fail to achieve their desired outcomes.

He called for stronger mutual trust and cooperation among all stakeholders to ensure better healthcare services.
