Bangladesh secured a commanding 228-run first-innings lead over Australia in the Darwin Test after an impressive batting display followed a dominant performance by their pace bowlers.
Bangladesh were bowled out for 426, with opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim scoring a century and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mehidy Hasan Miraz contributing crucial half-centuries.
Earlier, Bangladesh’s pace attack had dismissed Australia for 198, with Mahmudul Hasan taking six wickets.
Resuming on the third morning, Bangladesh lost Hasan Mahmud early after he was trapped lbw by Josh Hazlewood. Hasan made 14 from 92 balls after forming a stubborn partnership with Miraz late on the second day.
Taijul Islam briefly entertained the Bangladesh camp by hitting Hazlewood for a six with a fine flick, but he was soon dismissed by the same bowler for 17 off 23 balls.
Miraz, however, remained firm at the other end and brought up his 10th Test half-century in his 59th Test. He played a key role in taking Bangladesh past 400 and pushing their lead beyond 200.
Taskin Ahmed provided valuable support as the pair remained unbeaten at the end of the first session.
Miraz eventually fell in the second session, edging Hazlewood after scoring 65 off 154 balls, including five fours and a six. Ebadot Hossain then hit a six before being dismissed by Hazlewood for seven.
Taskin remained unbeaten on 14 as Bangladesh were bowled out for 426.
Earlier in the innings, Tanzid scored 101, Shanto made 84 and Mominul Haque contributed 49.
Hazlewood was Australia’s most successful bowler, claiming several key wickets as Bangladesh built a substantial advantage in the Test.
