A gunfight between police and suspected drug dealers in Fatullah, Narayanganj, left at least four people injured, including three police officers, on Saturday afternoon.
The incident took place around 3pm near the Isdair railway line. Police arrested two suspected drug dealers, identified as Jasim, 24, and Mohon, 23. Jasim sustained a gunshot wound to his leg and was taken to hospital. Police said a loaded pistol was recovered from him.
According to police and local residents, a group of armed drug dealers was reportedly roaming the area when Fatullah Model Police Station officers launched an operation after receiving information about their presence.
The suspects allegedly opened fire and threw bricks at the police, injuring Sub-Inspectors Md Rafique and Nandan Chandra Sarker and constable Rashedul.
Officer-in-Charge of Fatullah Model Police Station Mohammad Mahbub Alam said police returned fire in self-defence and later chased and detained two suspects.
Local residents alleged that Jasim had been arrested several days earlier in the capital’s airport area with a firearm.
His father, Razzak, and brother, Wasim, were also arrested in April with firearms and ammunition.
They were later released on bail and allegedly attempted to regain control over drug trafficking and juvenile gangs in the Isdair area.
