Bangladesh Athletics Federation has permanently barred two female athletes, Jannat Begum and Kabita Roy, from competing in women’s events after medical tests found biological characteristics deemed inconsistent with eligibility for the female category.
The decision followed an investigation by a five-member medical board formed in September last year.
The board completed its work in May and submitted its final report to the Bangladesh Athletics Federation on May 16.
Jannat, an athlete of the Bangladesh Army, holds national records in javelin and discus, and has won eight gold, one silver and two bronze medals.
Kabita, who represented the Bangladesh Navy, competed in the 100m, 200m and 4×100m relay, winning one gold, one silver and two bronze medals.
The federation has also decided to revoke all of their medals.
The case reflects a wider international debate over eligibility rules for women’s sports, particularly concerning testosterone levels and biological sex characteristics.
World Athletics and other international sports bodies have introduced eligibility measures, while the issue remains legally and ethically contested.
