Bangladesh have created history by defeating Australia by nine wickets in a Test on Australian soil for the first time. The victory is only Bangladesh’s second Test win against Australia overall.
After Hasan Mahmud’s six-wicket haul in the first innings and a century from Tanzid Hasan Tamim, Bangladesh began to believe that a historic result was possible. Their hopes were fulfilled as they completed a remarkable victory.
Australia were bowled out for 198 in their first innings, while Bangladesh posted 426 to secure a 228-run lead. Tanzid scored 101, Najmul Hossain Shanto made 84, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz contributed a valuable 65.
Miraz then produced another outstanding all-round performance, taking five wickets in Australia’s second innings. He also reached the milestone of 1,000 Test Championship runs and 100 wickets, becoming only the second Bangladeshi to achieve the feat.
Australia fought back through Cameron Green, who scored a patient 104—the third century of his Test career and his first on home soil. However, Bangladesh’s bowlers kept the pressure on. Miraz dismissed Nathan Lyon as the final wicket, wrapping up Australia’s second innings for 284.
That left Bangladesh with a modest target of 57 runs.
Tanzid, despite his century in the first innings, was dismissed for a duck after being bowled by Josh Hazlewood with Bangladesh on four. But Sadman Islam, unbeaten on 25, and Mominul Haque, unbeaten on 30, calmly guided Bangladesh to a historic nine-wicket victory.
The win marks Bangladesh’s first-ever Test victory in Australia and their second Test win over the Australians overall.
The second Test of the series will begin on August 22 in Mackay.
