Bangladesh have achieved one of the biggest milestones in their Test history by defeating Australia by nine wickets in Darwin to secure their first Test victory on Australian soil.
Led by Najmul Hossain Shanto, Bangladesh completed the historic win on the fourth day after chasing down a modest target of 57, losing only one wicket. The victory came in only Bangladesh’s third Test in Australia, 23 years after their first appearance there.
The result also puts Bangladesh in a select group of Asian teams that have beaten Australia in Test cricket on their home soil. Pakistan secured its first Test win in Australia in its seventh match there, while India had to wait until its 12th Test. Sri Lanka, despite playing 15 Tests in Australia, are yet to win there.
Bangladesh’s victory was built on a commanding all-round performance. Australia were dismissed for just 198 in their first innings, with Hasan Mahmud taking six wickets. Bangladesh then responded with 426, gaining a huge 228-run first-innings lead. Opener Tanzid Hasan scored 101, while Mehidy Hasan Miraz contributed 65 to strengthen Bangladesh’s position.
Australia showed more resistance in their second innings, largely through Cameron Green, who scored a century. But Bangladesh’s bowlers kept the pressure on and eventually dismissed the hosts for 284.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz played a key role with the ball, taking five wickets in the second innings, while Hasan Mahmud finished with nine wickets in the match. Australia were left with a target of only 57, which Bangladesh reached comfortably with nine wickets in hand.
The nine-wicket victory is also Bangladesh’s second-largest Test win by wickets. Their biggest came in 2024, when they defeated Pakistan by 10 wickets in Rawalpindi.
The Darwin triumph carries added significance because Australia have long dominated Asian teams at home. Bangladesh’s success ends a lengthy wait for another Asian side to register a Test victory against Australia on Australian soil.
It is also Bangladesh’s first Test win over Australia away from home. Their previous victory against the Australians came in Dhaka in 2017, when they won by 20 runs.
The result represents a major step forward for Bangladesh’s Test cricket. After their historic away victory over New Zealand in 2022 and the 2024 series sweep against Pakistan, the Darwin win provides further evidence that Bangladesh can compete with top Test nations beyond home conditions.
For Shanto’s side, the nine-wicket victory is not only a historic result but also a statement that Bangladesh’s Test ambitions are no longer confined to familiar conditions.
