A low-pressure system over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas has intensified and is likely to move further northwest and strengthen, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department said Sunday.
The system could bring gusty winds over the country’s seaports, the northern Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas, according to a forecast issued by meteorologist AKM Nazmul Haque.
Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra seaports have been asked to hoist local cautionary signal No. 3 due to the weather system.
Fishing boats and trawlers operating in the northern Bay of Bengal have also been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution until further notice.
The weather department has separately issued warnings for inland river ports in seven regions.
According to the forecast, temporary gusty or squally winds accompanied by rain or thunderstorms may sweep across the areas at speeds of 45 to 60 km per hour from the south and southeast.
The affected areas are Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Cumilla, Noakhali, Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar. River ports in these regions have been advised to display cautionary signal No. 1.
