A passenger sleeper bus operated by Royal Coach caught fire on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway in Daudkandi, Cumilla, on Monday morning.
The bus was completely gutted by the blaze, but no major casualties were reported as passengers managed to get off quickly.
Police and eyewitnesses said the bus was travelling from Cox’s Bazar to Dhaka when it reached near the Reliable CNG Filling Station in Eliotganj. At the time, an unidentified vehicle reportedly rammed the bus from behind, triggering the fire.
The passengers quickly rushed off the bus before the flames could spread further, preventing any loss of life.
Eliotganj Highway Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Faruk Islam confirmed the incident, saying the fire started after the unidentified vehicle hit the sleeper bus.
Police rushed to the scene after receiving the report and moved the passengers to a safe distance.
The bus driver and staff reportedly fled the scene shortly after the incident. The damaged bus has been taken into police custody, while traffic on the highway is now operating normally.
