A total of 438 people were killed and 561 injured in 472 road accidents across the country in June 2026, with motorcyclists accounting for the highest number of fatalities, according to the Road Safety Foundation (RSF).
Among those killed were 44 women and 56 children. In addition, seven people died in nine waterway accidents, while 18 people were killed in 21 railway track accidents during the same period.
The figures were revealed in the RSF’s monthly road accident monitoring report, released on Sunday.
According to the report, 145 motorcycle accidents claimed 134 lives, accounting for 30.59 percent of all road fatalities and 30.72 percent of all reported road accidents. Pedestrians made up the second-highest number of fatalities, with 91 deaths (20.77 percent), followed by 57 drivers and their assistants (13 percent).
By mode of transport, the fatalities included 134 motorcyclists, 27 bus passengers, 37 passengers of trucks, covered vans, pickups and trolleys, 14 occupants of private cars, microbuses and ambulances, 112 passengers of three-wheelers, 15 passengers of locally made vehicles, and eight rickshaw and bicycle riders.
Of the total accidents, 151 occurred on national highways, 194 on regional roads, 64 on rural roads, 57 on urban roads, and six at other locations.
The report said 109 accidents resulted from head-on collisions, 206 from vehicles losing control, 97 involved pedestrians being hit, 53 were rear-end collisions, while seven occurred due to other causes.
A total of 713 vehicles were involved in the crashes, including 157 motorcycles, 141 three-wheelers, 116 buses, 107 trucks, 24 covered vans, 28 pickups, 16 microbuses, 13 private cars, four ambulances, 42 locally made vehicles, seven rickshaws, four bicycles, and 30 unidentified vehicles.
Time-based analysis showed that 31.35 percent of the accidents occurred in the morning, followed by 17.58 percent in the afternoon, 14.19 percent in the evening, 11.44 percent at dusk, 19.27 percent at night, and 6.14 percent at dawn.
Division-wise, Dhaka Division recorded the highest number of accidents, with 116 crashes claiming 118 lives, while Mymensingh Division reported the fewest, with 19 accidents and 16 deaths. In the capital, 32 road accidents left 24 people dead and 49 others injured.
Among the deceased were one police officer, four teachers, two journalists, one physician, three engineers, four lawyers, one Chinese national, 13 bank and insurance employees, 17 NGO workers, 21 political activists, 24 businesspeople, 19 sales representatives, four mosque imams or caretakers, six garment workers, five construction workers, two persons with disabilities, and 58 students.
The RSF said the report was prepared using data collected from nine national newspapers, 17 national and regional online news portals, electronic media, and the organisation’s own sources.
According to the foundation, the main causes of road accidents include unsafe vehicles and roads, reckless speeding, drivers’ lack of skill and risky behaviour, the absence of fixed working hours and fair wages for drivers, the movement of slow-moving vehicles on highways, reckless motorcycle riding by young people, violations of traffic laws, weak traffic management, limited capacity of the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), and extortion in the public transport sector.
