Three people were killed after a private helicopter crashed into the sea shortly after takeoff from the popular Greek tourist island of Sifnos, authorities said.
The accident occurred around midnight on Monday, August 17. The Fire Service confirmed that all three people aboard the helicopter died.
According to Greek media outlet Kathimerini, the Bell helicopter had taken off from a nearby helipad and was expected to fly over the island. However, it plunged into the sea just seconds after becoming airborne.
The cause of the crash was not immediately known. An investigation is underway to determine what led to the accident.
Kathimerini reported that the pilot had been hired only two months before the crash.
Authorities have yet to establish whether the pilot’s recent appointment was in any way connected to the accident.
