Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) is launching a dedicated “Pink Bus” service for women in Dhaka on Tuesday, August 18, aimed at ensuring safer and more comfortable public transport for female passengers.
The buses will be operated entirely by female drivers and conductors.
The service will be formally inaugurated at 10am at the BRTC Dhaka Truck Depot in Tejgaon.
Initially, 10 buses will operate on several major routes across the capital.
Regular passenger services on the designated routes are expected to begin from Wednesday.
The routes include New Market/Coca-Cola–Motijheel, Taltala–Motijheel, Demra Staff Quarter–Motijheel, Mirpur-10–Motijheel, Mirpur-12–Motijheel, Abdullahpur–GPO, Mirpur–Motijheel and Mohammadpur–Motijheel, among others.
A special service will also operate on the Gazipur–Airport route.
Outside Dhaka, two buses will operate on the Sherpur–Matidali route in Bogura, while another two will run between Kalurghat and Patenga in Chattogram.
BRTC said the initiative is part of the government’s election manifesto and is expected not only to improve women’s safety and comfort in public transport but also to increase women’s employment and participation in the transport sector.
