A chemist has been arrested in Dhaka for allegedly selling the banned drug THC through advertisements on the online marketplace Daraz, according to the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC).
The suspect, identified as Mohammad Anisur Rahman, 40, was arrested during a raid at a flat in the Satarkul area of Badda.
Authorities recovered 620 millilitres of THC-laced liquid, estimated to be worth around Tk 6 million, along with equipment used to prepare and package the substance.
According to investigators, Anisur had been selling THC for more than five years by marketing it online as “CBD oil” or “aromatic oil.”
Investigators found information indicating that around 405 bottles had been sold through Daraz over the past five years.
The DNC first posed as a customer and ordered the product. Chemical tests later confirmed the presence of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive component of cannabis.
Officers then placed another order, leading to the arrest of a Daraz delivery worker who delivered the parcel.
The worker was later released after investigators found no direct or indirect involvement in the drug trade.
A case has been filed with Badda Police Station, naming Anisur as well as Daraz’s managing director as accused.
The DNC has said that using online platforms to sell drugs is a criminal offence and that it is monitoring online drug trading.
