Bangladesh has introduced an AI-powered automated traffic fine system on a section of the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway to strengthen road safety and improve traffic discipline.
Home Affairs Minister Salahuddin Ahmed inaugurated the system at Meghna Ghat in Narayanganj at around 11:30am Tuesday.
Initially, the system will operate on the highway section between Signboard in Dhaka and City Gate in Chattogram.
According to Highway Police, the AI-based “Auto Fine System” is designed to detect traffic violations automatically and ensure swift, transparent and technology-driven enforcement.
AI cameras will identify violations including speeding, illegal parking and driving on the wrong side of the road. Fines will then be issued automatically to the offending vehicles.
Salahuddin Ahmed said drivers violating traffic rules would receive automatic fines, with notifications sent directly to their mobile phones. The fines can also be paid through mobile financial services, he said.
“We hope this initiative will bring a revolutionary change to road discipline,” the minister said, urging transport owners, workers’ organisations and police to work together to ensure the system’s success.
He said the system would eventually be introduced on all highways across Bangladesh, adding that automated enforcement could also help reduce opportunities for extortion.
The launch event was attended by Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation President Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, Narayanganj-3 MP Azharul Islam Mannan, Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs Monzur Morshed Chowdhury and Inspector General of Police Md Ali Hossain Fakir, among others.
Highway Police Additional Inspector General Faruk Ahmed chaired the programme.
