Two people have been killed in a shooting at a school in the Philippine city of Zamboanga on Tuesday, around 800 kilometres from the capital Manila.
Police said the shooter was also a ninth-grade student at a school under the private Ateneo de Zamboanga University. Armed with a pistol and a rifle, he entered a classroom and opened fire on students, who ducked for cover.
Police confirmed that a Grade 10 student was killed and two others were injured. The shooter later died after taking his own life, according to authorities.
The student reportedly used a body camera during the attack and livestreamed the incident.
The latest shooting comes two months after a similar incident at a public high school in Tacloban. In that attack in June, two students opened fire, killing at least three classmates and injuring 20 others.
Meanwhile, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr has ordered law enforcement agencies to investigate the incident and take necessary measures to prevent violence in schools.
In a statement, Marcos said schools should be among the safest places in the country because they are where children go to learn, grow and pursue their dreams for the future.
A female police spokesperson said an investigation has begun, with authorities initially examining how the suspect managed to bring firearms into the school.
She added that investigators were still working to determine the motive or circumstances behind the attack.
