Trump’s New Map: Hormuz now ‘US territory’

18 August 2026 20:14 Updated: 18 August 2026 20:14

US President Donald Trump has posted a map on social media showing the Strait of Hormuz marked as “new” US territory. Trump published the map on Tuesday (August 18) without adding any further comment, ABC News reported.

Last week, Trump said he could declare the Strait of Hormuz US territory “very soon.” His remarks sparked widespread international discussion. He has now followed up those comments by posting the map.

Iran has strongly reacted to Trump’s post. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi described Trump’s map as a “delusion.”

He said that although Trump correctly labeled the body of water as the “Persian Gulf” on the map, his idea regarding the Strait of Hormuz would soon either be corrected, or “we will correct the delusion of this delusional person.”

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy transit routes. Located between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, the waterway carries a significant share of the world’s oil and gas supplies to international markets.
