Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured that Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will receive a “respectful welcome” when he visits India, according to Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi.
Speaking at an event in Dhaka on Tuesday, Trivedi said he met Modi in New Delhi after meeting Tarique Rahman in Dhaka.
Modi told him to convey that Tarique would be given the honour he deserved during his India visit and that the trip would be memorable and ultimately benefit the people of both countries.
Trivedi said Modi had also emphasised the need for the two prime ministers to meet.
He added that India was keen to strengthen ties with Bangladesh despite some differences between the two countries.
“Bangladesh and India do not only share a border; they share dreams, aspirations and equality,” Trivedi said, stressing the importance of dialogue to resolve differences.
He said India deeply understands the concerns of the Bangladeshi people and that such concerns can be reduced through greater engagement between the two countries.
Trivedi also said India and Bangladesh should work together to ensure peace and prosperity and create opportunities for young people.
He urged Bangladesh to address differences over the past while continuing to move forward.
His comments come amid ongoing discussions over Tarique Rahman’s possible visit to India, with diplomatic sources previously indicating that a visit could take place between August 20 and 25.
