Chattogram: Workers of Ityadi Jeans Limited blocked a road and staged a protest in the Aturar Depot area of Chattogram city on Wednesday, demanding payment of four months’ outstanding wages and fulfillment of other demands. The blockade disrupted traffic and caused severe congestion on the road.
At around 11:30am on Wednesday, workers of Ityadi Jeans Limited took position on the Oxygen-Muradpur Road at Aturar Depot, demanding payment of their unpaid wages and other entitlements.
The protesting workers said the company had been withholding their wages and allowances for a long time. They also alleged that the factory authorities had failed to meet their other legitimate demands. As a result, they were forced to take to the streets, they said.
The workers warned that they would be compelled to announce tougher programmes if their demands were not met and their outstanding wages were not paid soon.
As the road blockade disrupted traffic, members of the law enforcement agencies went to the spot to bring the situation under control. Discussions were underway between the workers and the factory authorities in an effort to resolve the issue.
Mahmuda Begum, superintendent of Chattogram Industrial Police, said garment workers were protesting over unpaid wages and several other demands.
“Our police and regular police personnel are at the scene and working to control the situation. We are trying to reach a settlement by holding discussions with both sides,” she said.
