Dipu Moni gets 12-hr parole for husband’s funeral

Former education minister and Awami League joint general secretary Dipu Moni, who is currently in jail, has been granted parole for 12 hours following the death of her husband, Toufiq Newaz.

She will be released on parole from 6am to 6pm on Thursday, August 20, on humanitarian grounds.

Dipu Moni applied for parole on Wednesday, August 19, following her husband’s death. Her family submitted the application to the Munshiganj deputy commissioner through lawyer Advocate Gazi Faisal Islam.

Dipu Moni’s lawyer and family members went to the Munshiganj deputy commissioner’s office on Wednesday to complete the application process. Following approval from the district administration, the decision was made to release her on parole.

The lawyer said the application was made on humanitarian grounds, considering the death of Dipu Moni’s husband. Following the district administration’s decision, the necessary procedures for her release from jail will be completed.

Toufiq Newaz died at a hospital in Dhaka at around 10:30pm on Tuesday, August 18, while undergoing treatment. He had been suffering from various kidney and liver complications for a long time.

After learning of her father’s death, Dipu Moni’s daughter, Tani Dipaboli Newaz, visited her mother at Munshiganj District Jail at around 12:30pm on Wednesday. After discussing the matter with her mother, the family decided to apply for her release on parole.

Munshiganj District Jail authorities said they would complete the necessary procedures for Dipu Moni’s parole release in accordance with the district administration’s decision.
