Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan was transferred from Adiala Jail to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad early Friday for medical examination, following an order from the country’s Supreme Court.
The three-member Supreme Court bench had ordered authorities to move Khan to the private hospital within 48 hours and have him examined by an independent medical board, including his personal physician.
Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), confirmed his transfer.
His family and lawyers have raised concerns over his deteriorating health, including reported vision problems.
The government, however, has said previous medical reports did not indicate any condition requiring urgent treatment.
Tight security measures were put in place around the hospital, with hundreds of security personnel deployed in the area.
Khan, 73, has been imprisoned since August 2023 following convictions in several cases, which he and his party describe as politically motivated.
