Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has returned to prison after spending several hours at a hospital for a medical examination, Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said on Friday.
Khan, 73, was transferred from prison overnight on August 20-21 following a Supreme Court order directing authorities to provide him with medical care.
A team of doctors, including an ophthalmologist, cardiologist and physician, examined him and declared him medically fit, Tarar said in a post on X.
Khan was taken to the state-run Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad instead of Shifa International Hospital, where the Supreme Court had ordered him to be transferred.
Tarar attributed the change to a security situation allegedly created by supporters of Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party along the planned route.
The development came after Khan was allowed to leave prison for a medical examination for the first time since February. His supporters gathered in Islamabad overnight and showered flowers on the vehicle believed to be carrying him to the hospital.
PTI had not immediately commented on the government’s claim that Khan was medically fit. Senior party leaders had earlier interpreted the Supreme Court order as allowing him to remain in hospital for several weeks.
In its order on Tuesday, the Supreme Court directed authorities to transfer Khan to Shifa International Hospital within two days and allow him access to a medical panel that included his personal physician.
