BNP’s former Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will take oath today as the country’s 23rd President. Voting for the presidential election was held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Thursday, with the BNP candidate winning with 255 votes. Following the announcement of the result, leaders of various political parties congratulated the newly elected president.
Immediately after the result was announced, Prime Minister Tarek Rahman congratulated Mirza Fakhrul, who was seated beside him, by presenting him with a red rose.
Later, Opposition Leader Dr. Shafiqur Rahman embraced Mirza Fakhrul. Soon afterward, lawmakers from the opposition alliance came forward to congratulate the country’s next president. They shook hands with him and embraced him.
At one point, Mujibur Rahman, elected lawmaker from Rajshahi-1 and Jamaat-e-Islami’s Naib-e-Ameer, shook hands with Mirza Fakhrul, kissed him on the forehead, congratulated him and prayed for him. The scene sparked mixed reactions on social media.
Voting in the presidential election began at 2:10pm Thursday in the Jatiya Sangsad chamber and continued until 5pm. A total of 349 members of parliament were eligible to vote, of whom 343 cast their ballots.
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir won the election with 255 votes, while his rival candidate, Colonel (retd.) Oli Ahmed, received 88 votes.
