Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has detained a Myanmar national with 3kg of crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as ice, during an operation on the Naf River in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar.
The detainee was identified as Mohammad Shah Alam, 50, a Myanmar citizen. BGB also seized a hand-operated wooden boat and two mobile phones allegedly used in the drug trafficking operation.
Lieutenant Colonel Hanifur Rahman Bhuiyan, commander of Teknaf Battalion-2 BGB, confirmed the arrest in a press release on Sunday (23 August).
Acting on intelligence that a drug shipment would enter Bangladesh through the Sabrang area after crossing the Naf River from Myanmar, a BGB patrol team took position in the river.
The team later spotted a wooden boat entering Bangladeshi waters from the Myanmar side. After confirming its movement, the BGB naval patrol intercepted and challenged the boat after it crossed into Bangladesh’s territorial waters.
According to the BGB commander, three suspected smugglers jumped into the Naf River and managed to swim into Bangladesh and escape after noticing the presence of the patrol team.
The BGB team, however, detained Shah Alam at the scene.
A subsequent search of the boat uncovered three packets containing a total of 3kg of crystal meth, which had been concealed in a specially constructed hidden compartment.
The seized items also included the wooden boat and two mobile phones allegedly used to transport the drugs.
