National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener and Opposition Chief Whip Nahid Islam has said the BNP government has completely failed during its first six months in office.
“BNP failed as an opposition party for 16 years, and now it has failed as a government as well,” he said.
He made the remarks on Monday at a press conference organized by the NCP’s subcommittee on policy and research to present what it described as the record of the BNP-led government’s failures during its first 180 days in office.
Highlighting the government’s shortcomings, Nahid Islam said, “In 180 days, the BNP government has demonstrated mismanagement and failure in 29 major areas, including the energy crisis, rising commodity prices and deterioration of law and order. They have failed to keep any of the promises they made to the people.”
He also alleged that important historical symbols and memories, including those related to the July uprising and Felani, had been removed from the July Museum.
The opposition chief whip said that although there had long been demands for the abolition of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), the government was instead restructuring the agency under a new name.
“The government is doing this merely to avoid sanctions,” he claimed.
The NCP convener also said the government’s failure to bring back former Inspector General of Police Benazir Ahmed was an indication of its weak foreign policy.
He said six months might not be sufficient time to fully assess a government’s performance, but the BNP government had neither apologized to the people for its failures nor acknowledged its lack of planning.
“The government is trying to return to its old style of politics. If it does not change course, it will face a massive popular movement,” Nahid Islam warned.
Claiming that the government had failed to establish the rule of law across the country, Nahid said, “On August 5, Sheikh Hasina held a press conference in Delhi with the cooperation of the Indian government.”
He further said industrial production had declined because of the gas shortage.
“Despite saying that electricity prices would not be increased, the BNP government raised power tariffs within three months,” he said.
“The government bears at least some responsibility for the electricity crisis. Whenever a crisis emerges, it blames the previous government, which is in no way desirable,” Nahid Islam added.
