China says it will take necessary measures to protect its rights and interests as the United States prepares to unveil what Washington has described as its toughest-ever sanctions on Iran.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said Beijing was closely monitoring developments and urged all sides to exercise restraint.

He warned that sanctions and pressure tactics would not help resolve the issues surrounding Iran.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has called on China to cooperate with Washington as the US prepares the new sanctions, which are expected to target countries and companies trading with Tehran.

Bessent is scheduled to hold a news conference at 18:00 GMT on Monday, following his warning last week that Washington would impose the “toughest sanctions in history” on Iran.

The looming measures are likely to further strain US-China relations and increase pressure on Iran’s international trade.
