A Dhaka court has issued summons against the president and three senior officials of Dhaka Club Limited over allegations of embezzling a former employee’s dues and threatening him with death.
Former club employee Ashik Molla filed the case before Metropolitan Magistrate Arifur Rahman’s court in Dhaka on Tuesday. After recording the complainant’s statement, the court took cognisance of the allegations and directed the four accused to appear before it on September 29.
The accused are Dhaka Club President and Robin Printing and Packaging Director Shamim Hossain; Director of Finance Tuhin Reza; CEO and Secretary Lt Col (retd) Sabbir Ahmed; and Chief Financial Officer Iqbal Hossain.
According to the complaint, Ashik joined Dhaka Club as an attendant on November 23, 2017, and was made a permanent employee on August 19, 2018.
He alleged that after working for the club for several years, he was suspended on January 26 this year in violation of service rules and was eventually dismissed on July 27 after being kept suspended for six months.
The complaint says the club owed him Tk 490,000 in service benefits, provident fund, gratuity, notice pay and unpaid wages.
After failing to receive his dues, Ashik applied for mediation to the office of the Deputy Inspector General of the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments under Section 124(A)(5) of the Bangladesh Labour Act.
The accused allegedly failed to appear for the mediation despite receiving notices. The labour inspector subsequently issued Ashik a written clearance certificate.
On August 15, Ashik went to Dhaka Club, where the accused allegedly handed him a cheque for Tk 116,981 but refused to pay the remaining Tk 373,019.
The complaint further alleges that the accused threatened to kill him if he continued pressing for the remaining amount.
