The International Crimes Tribunal-2 has ordered six accused to be shown arrested and sent to jail in a case over the alleged killing of student Ashabul Yamin during the July uprising in Savar.
The tribunal also directed authorities to publish newspaper notices requiring 13 other accused, including former MP Saiful Islam, to appear before the court.
The three-member tribunal, headed by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, passed the orders on Tuesday.
Yamin, a fourth-year student of Computer Science and Engineering at the Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST), was killed during a protest in Savar on July 18, 2024.
According to the case allegations, police and Awami League activists attacked a peaceful anti-discrimination student protest at Savar bus stand that day.
Yamin was allegedly dragged toward a police armoured personnel carrier (APC) and shot in the left side of his chest at around 1:30pm. He suffered multiple injuries from the gunfire.
The allegations further state that police personnel then placed Yamin, who was critically injured, on top of the APC and drove the vehicle around to intimidate protesters before eventually dropping him onto the road.
A police officer was allegedly instructed to shoot Yamin in the leg after he was removed from the APC. The officer reportedly believed Yamin was already dead and instead dragged him across the road and left him beside a median.
Locals later rescued the injured student and took him to Enam Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Six sent to jail
The six accused sent to jail are former Dhaka Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Operations) Md Abdullahil Kafi, former Additional SP of Savar Circle Md Shahidul Islam, ASI Mohammad Ali, Nayek Suhel Mia, Constable Mahfuz Mia and Mizanur Rahman.
The case has 19 accused in total.
Among those currently absconding are former Dhaka-16 MP Saiful Islam, former Dhaka Range DIG Syed Nurul Islam, former police superintendent Asaduzzaman Ripon, former Savar Police Station OC Shahjahan, former Ashulia Police Station OC AFM Sayed, former Savar Upazila Chairman Manzurul Alam Rajib, and several others.
The tribunal’s latest order is part of proceedings into allegations of crimes against humanity arising from the killing of Yamin during the July uprising.
