Canada imposes up to 50pc tariffs on 900 US products

Canada has announced retaliatory tariffs of up to 50 percent on nearly 900 US products as the trade dispute between the two North American neighbours escalates.

The tariffs, ranging from 15 to 50 percent, will take effect on September 8, according to Canada’s Department of Finance.

The measures target US goods worth about C$27.6 billion, including steel, dairy products, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics.

The move comes in response to new US tariffs of 50 percent on Canadian goods, which took effect on August 22 after trade negotiations between Ottawa and Washington broke down.

Canada said the counter-tariffs would match US duties on a dollar-for-dollar basis. The government has also announced a C$7.5 billion support package for businesses and workers affected by the escalating trade conflict.

The latest measures mark a further deterioration in trade relations between the two countries and raise concerns about higher costs for businesses and consumers on both sides of the border.
