The third session of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad will begin at 3pm on Thursday (August 27), with several important bills likely to be tabled and parliamentary standing committees potentially formed.
Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni told the media on Wednesday that the session would be brief. He said several important bills could be passed and standing committees formed during the session. The opposition’s important issues would also be discussed if they are raised in parliament.
According to parliamentary secretariat sources, the session may continue until September 12.
The session was convened on August 11 as part of a constitutional requirement. Under the Constitution, the gap between two parliamentary sessions cannot exceed 60 days. The previous session ended on July 15.
The new session therefore had to begin by September 11. However, it is being convened earlier as Prime Minister and Leader of the House Tarique Rahman is scheduled to attend a UN conference in the United States in the third week of September. He is expected to travel to the US on September 21 after the parliamentary session ends.
Parliamentary Secretariat sources said the National Human Rights Commission Bill, Enforced Disappearance Prevention and Redress Bill, and Transfer of Property (Amendment) Bill have already been submitted to the secretariat for introduction.
The Bank Resolution (Amendment) Bill, which has been approved by the Cabinet, and the Special Response Battalion (SRB) Bill may also be submitted soon for introduction.
The SRB bill seeks to dissolve the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and establish a new specialised force under the police.
Sources said the bills could be passed during the current parliamentary session after being tabled.
