Amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan recently signed a defense pact to strengthen security cooperation. Under the agreement, an attack on any one of the three countries will be considered an attack on all three.

There has been speculation that Bangladesh may join the defense alliance, sparking discussions and both supportive and critical reactions.

Opposition Leader and Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said that joining the Mecca Pact is entirely a matter for Bangladesh to decide.

He made the remarks in a post on his verified Facebook page at around 11:45 am on Thursday (August 27).

In the post, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman wrote, “Joining the Mecca Pact is entirely Bangladesh’s own matter. If Bangladesh makes any decision in the interests and needs of the country and its people, there is no reason for anyone else to feel distressed by it.”
