UN Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives, people going missing and widespread destruction caused by devastating floods in Nepal and China.
In Nepal, the death toll from flash floods has risen to 162, while more than 100 people remain missing, according to the country’s police.
Guterres extended his condolences to the families of those killed and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.
“I stand in solidarity with everyone affected by this disaster,” he said.
He said UN teams and partner agencies were mobilising relief supplies and personnel to support the Nepalese government’s ongoing rescue and relief operations.
Flash floods swept through several villages in Nepal’s mountainous areas near the Tibet border on Wednesday, causing extensive damage to roads, bridges and power infrastructure.
Nepal Police said 157 bodies had been recovered by Wednesday night. Rescue teams are continuing operations to locate those missing, while people from affected and high-risk areas are being moved to safer locations.
