Foreign Minister (FM) Khalilur Rahman has said that Bangladesh stands in full solidarity with the government and people of Nepal following the country’s devastating natural disaster. He said Bangladesh is ready to provide any kind of assistance Nepal may need.
Khalilur Rahman spoke by phone with Nepalese Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal on Thursday morning and conveyed the assurance. During the conversation, he also expressed deep grief and condolences on behalf of the people and government of Bangladesh. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed the information in a statement issued Thursday afternoon.
According to the statement, Khalilur Rahman described the disaster in Nepal as a devastating “tragedy.” He said the people of Bangladesh were thinking of and praying for the families who had lost their loved ones.
No casualties among Bangladeshi citizens have been reported so far. However, Khalilur Rahman urged the Nepalese government to inform Bangladesh if any Bangladeshi citizen is found to have been affected by the disaster.
The Nepalese foreign minister expressed gratitude for Bangladesh’s solidarity during the difficult time. He said Nepalese authorities were still assessing the extent of the damage. Following a comprehensive assessment of the situation, Nepal would inform Bangladesh if any specific assistance was required.
Khalilur Rahman also conveyed Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s personal message of condolence to Nepalese Prime Minister Balendra Shah.
The devastating natural disaster that struck the Nepal-Tibet border on Wednesday has so far reportedly claimed 177 lives. Around 1,500 people remain missing in Nepal and Tibet, including more than 800 foreign tourists.
