Dhaka University has honoured 62 teachers and researchers for their outstanding contributions to research and their role in enhancing the university’s international academic profile.
The honorees were recognised for receiving 2,000 or more citations on their Google Scholar profiles at a ceremony held at the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building on Thursday.
Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr A B M Obaidul Islam presided over the event, which was attended by pro-vice-chancellors, the treasurer, deans, department chairmen, directors of institutes and centres, the proctor and other university officials.
Congratulating the awardees, Prof Obaidul Islam urged them to play a leading role in transforming Dhaka University into a stronger research oriented institution and improving its standing in international rankings.
He said government funding alone would not be sufficient to drive the university’s future development, stressing the need for greater support from alumni and industry.
The Vice-Chancellor said the university administration was working on a 20-year academic development plan as part of wider efforts to strengthen education and research.
He also highlighted initiatives to build stronger industry-academia partnerships and expand alumni networks, with the goal of establishing a Tk 1,000 crore research fund and another Tk 1,000 crore fund for student welfare.
Prof Obaidul Islam said Dhaka University was also pursuing joint education and research projects with renowned universities worldwide.
“We want to make research activities more dynamic and effective by undertaking ‘lab-to-lab’ and ‘researcher-to-researcher’ initiatives with universities and research organizations around the world,” he said.
The Vice-Chancellor called on teachers and researchers to work together in a coordinated manner to strengthen the university’s research capacity and global academic presence.
