Pakistan has welcomed Bangladesh’s interest in the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement, saying the possible participation of Bangladesh could further strengthen cooperation among Muslim-majority countries.
The agreement was signed by Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan in Makkah on August 7. Under the pact, an armed attack on any one of the three countries is to be treated as an attack on all three.
Bangladesh has expressed a positive attitude towards the agreement, although no final decision has been made on joining it.
Foreign Affairs State Minister Humayun Kabir recently said Bangladesh’s interest in such a security arrangement was natural and that the matter was being viewed positively.
Pakistan has also indicated that Bangladesh’s possible involvement would be significant for closer strategic cooperation in the region.
However, Bangladesh’s final decision will depend on its national interests and broader foreign policy considerations.
The possible move has attracted attention in India. New Delhi has said it is closely monitoring developments surrounding the agreement and assessing its potential impact on regional peace, stability and India’s national security.
For now, Bangladesh’s participation remains under consideration, with no formal decision to join the Makkah defence framework yet.
