The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecast strong winds of up to 80 km/h across 12 regions of the country by noon on Monday, accompanied by heavy rain or thunderstorms. River ports in the affected areas have been advised to hoist Local Cautionary Signal No. 2.
The warning was issued in a special inland river port forecast covering the period from 5:00 am to 1:00 pm on Monday (July 6).
According to the forecast, signed by meteorologist Dr Muhammad Abul Kalam Mallik, the regions of Dhaka, Faridpur, Jashore, Kushtia, Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Cumilla, Noakhali, Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, and Sylhet may experience temporary squally winds from the south or southeast at speeds of 60–80 km/h, along with rain or thunderstorms.
In view of the expected weather conditions, river ports in these areas have been instructed to display Local Cautionary Signal No. 2.
Meanwhile, river ports in the rest of the country have been advised to hoist Signal No. 1, as winds of 45–60 km/h from the south or southeast may affect those areas.
In its 24-hour weather bulletin issued on Sunday night, the BMD also forecast that most places in Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions, and many places in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, and Mymensingh divisions, are likely to experience light to moderate rain or thundershowers with temporary gusty winds through 6:00 pm on Monday.
The weather office also warned that moderately heavy to very heavy rainfall may occur in some parts of the country.
