Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has accused Israel’s “militant” government of destabilising the Middle East through provocative actions, while calling for stronger cooperation among Muslim-majority countries to counter growing regional tensions.
Speaking at an event, Erdogan said Israel’s policies posed a threat to peace in the region and accused the country of targeting those working to uphold humanitarian values, according to Al Jazeera.
“Zionism is creating a threat to the peace of its neighbours,” Erdogan said.
He also criticised the international community for failing to adequately respond to serious allegations against Israel.
Erdogan accused Israel of operating what he described as a “genocide network” that disregards international law, principles, values and established boundaries.
He said Turkey was seeking to strengthen its relations and alliances with countries across the Muslim world as tensions continued to rise in the Middle East.
Erdogan’s remarks came weeks after Israeli aircraft carried out an airstrike on a military airbase in Syria. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at the time that the strike was aimed at preventing Turkey from deploying troops at the base.
