Home Affairs Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has announced substantial cash rewards for people who provide information leading to the recovery of looted and illegal firearms, as the government moves to intensify its crackdown on illegal weapons.
A special police unit has been formed to recover looted and illegal firearms, while the government has announced cash rewards ranging from Tk 10,000 to Tk 2 lakh for information leading to the recovery of illegal weapons.
The new reward scheme is aimed at encouraging public cooperation in locating and recovering weapons that were looted or illegally held, while strengthening law-enforcement efforts to curb their use in criminal activities.
He also warned that police officers who fail to make measurable progress within set deadlines in tackling terrorism, extortion and drug-related crimes could face strict legal and administrative action.
The minister made the remarks during a press briefing on Saturday (August 29), following his speech as the chief guest at the Quarterly Crime Review Conference (April–June 2026, Second Quarter) organised by Police Headquarters at the Bangladesh Police Auditorium in Rajarbagh, Dhaka.
During the meeting, senior police officials presented their demands for greater technological support and other resources to strengthen law enforcement and maintain public order. The minister said the government was working on the issues raised by the police.
He also issued necessary directives to police officials to keep the law-and-order situation under control.
Responding to journalists after the meeting, Salahuddin said the overall law-and-order situation would gradually improve and that police had been instructed to take effective measures to achieve that goal.
