DHAKA: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today said the government is committed to fulfilling the goals and aspirations of Freedom Fighters, victims of enforced disappearances and killings, democratic movement fighters, and the martyrs and injured victims of the July uprising.
“Sometimes everything cannot be achieved quickly due to various realities, but we will continue our utmost efforts,” he said while handing over job appointment letters to members of families affected by enforced disappearances and killings, families of July uprising martyrs and those injured during the uprising.
The ceremony was held at the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon this afternoon.
A total of 74 people received appointment letters, including members of families affected by enforced disappearances and killings, families of July uprising martyrs and those injured in the uprising. The Prime Minister personally handed over letters to 10 recipients.
Speaking after the ceremony, Tarique said the programme was “extremely painful” as it brought back memories of people who should have been alive and present today but were not.
“It is through their great sacrifice that the 20-crore people of the country have today been freed from a fascist ruler,” he said.
“Only Almighty Allah knows where and in what condition those who are absent among us today are. We should raise our hands and pray to Allah to keep those people in the best possible condition wherever they are,” he added.
The Prime Minister said the government would make every possible effort, despite its limited resources, to stand by families affected by enforced disappearances and killings, as well as families of those killed or injured in the July uprising.
“The irreparable losses you have suffered can never be compensated. Yet, we were with you, are with you and will remain with you in the future,” he said.
Tarique said many people who made great sacrifices for major national achievements were no longer alive.
“To those who are with us, I would say that you made the highest sacrifices for the country and suffered physical harm in various ways. The present government will make every possible effort to fulfil the aspirations for which you risked your lives,” he said.
Describing the sacrifices of democratic fighters as the government’s main source of strength and inspiration, he said their sacrifices, support and cooperation gave the government the courage to work with full vigour.
“You are our main source of strength and inspiration,” he said.
The Prime Minister sought continued support and encouragement from the families of martyrs so that the government could work to fulfil the aspirations of the martyrs and other democratic fighters for the country and its people.
Family members affected by enforced disappearances and killings and those injured in the July uprising also shared their experiences and feelings with the Prime Minister at the programme.
The event was conducted by Atikur Rahman Ruman, convener of ‘Amra BNP Paribar’.
Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Gani, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister ABM Abdus Sattar, Press Secretary AAM Saleh Shibly, Deputy Press Secretaries Jahidul Islam Rony, Hasan Shiplu, Md Suzauddhowla (Sujan Mahmud) and Shahadat Shadhin, Assistant Press Secretaries AKM Nazmul Haque and Gazi Shahriar Pamir, and Amra BNP Paribar member Mokshedul Momin Mithun, among others, were present.
