Ahmadul Kobir, Kuala Lumpur: The Bangladesh High Commission in Kuala Lumpur has urged Bangladeshi expatriates in Malaysia to use social media responsibly and exercise caution to avoid legal, security and financial risks.
In an advisory posted on its Facebook page on Saturday, the High Commission said expatriates should comply with Malaysian laws and regulations, workplace policies and local cyber laws governing social media use. It also stressed the need to respect the country’s religious, social and cultural values.
The advisory, issued in line with guidance from the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment, outlined a number of precautions for Bangladeshi social media users.
The High Commission advised expatriates to use social media mainly to maintain positive communication with family and friends. It said they should follow their employers’ policies before posting information, photographs or videos concerning their jobs, workplaces or organisations.
It also urged expatriates to remain vigilant when dealing with unknown individuals, unfamiliar links, files or messages and to guard against scams and phishing attempts.
Users were advised to verify the authenticity of information, photographs and videos before sharing them and to avoid suspicious or provocative online activities.
The High Commission advised expatriates not to share, like, comment on or promote posts, photographs, videos or messages related to terrorism, extremism or banned organisations.
They were also urged not to spread rumours, misinformation or hate speech.
Regarding international conflicts, including the Israel-Palestine and Iran-Israel conflicts, expatriates were advised against sharing or promoting provocative or controversial content that could violate local laws.
They were also cautioned against participating in political or online campaigns prohibited in Malaysia.
The advisory further urged expatriates not to donate money to individuals, organisations or online fundraising campaigns without proper verification.
They were also advised not to photograph or publish images or videos of workplaces, airports, ports, government facilities or other security-sensitive locations.
For personal security, the High Commission urged Bangladeshi expatriates not to post their own or others’ passports, visas, national identity cards, bank details or other sensitive personal information on social media.
It also advised them to avoid posts, comments or online arguments that could incite religious, ethnic or racial hatred.
Expatriates were further warned against fake job advertisements, illegal visa schemes, promises of quick earnings, and suspicious investment or cryptocurrency scams.
The High Commission also called on Bangladeshi expatriates not to post, comment or react in ways that support or glorify crime, violence or other illegal activities.
The advisory said responsible use of social media would help expatriates protect their personal and financial security while respecting the laws and social environment of the country where they live and work.
