A distant view of the explosion following Russian missile and drone strikes on Kyiv, showing smoke and fire rising from residential areas after the attack.

At least nine people were killed and 46 others injured after Russia launched a large-scale overnight missile and drone attack on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, early Monday, striking residential buildings and apartment complexes, Ukrainian officials said.

The latest assault came just days after another deadly Russian bombardment of the city, underscoring the continued intensity of Moscow’s aerial campaign despite ongoing international diplomatic efforts to end the more than four-year war.

According to Reuters, explosions echoed across Kyiv before dawn as air defence systems attempted to intercept incoming missiles and drones. Fires broke out in several districts after debris and direct strikes hit residential areas, damaging apartment blocks, vehicles and civilian infrastructure.

Kyiv Military Administration chief Timur Tkachenko said at least nine people were killed and 46 others wounded in the attack. Emergency crews continued searching through the rubble for possible survivors, raising concerns that the casualty toll could increase.

Rescue workers, firefighters and medical teams rushed to multiple impact sites across the capital, battling blazes and evacuating residents from damaged buildings. Images released by Ukrainian authorities showed smoke billowing over neighbourhoods, shattered apartment blocks and emergency responders carrying injured civilians to safety.

The attack once again highlighted the growing toll on civilians as Russia continues to target Ukrainian cities with waves of missiles and drones. Air raid sirens sounded for several hours across Kyiv, forcing thousands of residents to seek shelter underground.

The fresh strikes came amid heightened tensions following recent Russian attacks across Ukraine and as diplomatic efforts to revive peace negotiations remain stalled. Kyiv has repeatedly urged its Western allies to strengthen Ukraine’s air defence capabilities to better protect major cities from increasingly frequent aerial assaults.

Russia has intensified long-range missile and drone attacks in recent months, while Ukraine has continued to strike military targets deep inside Russian territory using domestically produced drones. The conflict, now in its fifth year, has caused tens of thousands of deaths, displaced millions of people and left vast areas of Ukraine devastated.

Authorities are continuing rescue and recovery operations in Kyiv as investigators assess the full extent of the destruction caused by Monday’s attack.
