All meat sold in Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) areas must carry a city corporation seal, and meat sold without the seal will be seized, DSCC Administrator Bir Muktijoddha Md Abdus Salam has said.
He also warned that action would be taken against shops selling meat from animals slaughtered illegally.
He made the remarks on Monday while speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of a modern slaughterhouse in Hazaribagh.
Abdus Salam said the seal would allow consumers to determine whether the meat had been inspected and approved by the city corporation.
“Every piece of meat must carry the Dhaka City Corporation seal to confirm that it has been inspected. Meat must be sold at designated shops, where it should bear the inspection seal of a city corporation health officer,” he said.
He said animals could not be slaughtered at markets or other unauthorised locations outside designated slaughterhouses.
Anyone slaughtering animals at unauthorised locations would face fines, while shops found selling meat from illegally slaughtered animals would be shut down, he said.
The administrator said meat brought in from other locations could raise questions about whether the animal was healthy, properly slaughtered or suffering from any disease. It could also be difficult to determine whether beef being sold was actually from cattle or buffalo.
“To ensure these issues are properly addressed, animals must be slaughtered at designated slaughterhouses,” he said.
Abdus Salam also stressed that health officials and staff must be present during animal slaughter.
“If any health officer or employee remains absent from duty, disciplinary action will be taken against them,” he said.
