A new Pokémon movie is coming to the big screen in 2027, marking the franchise’s first feature film in seven years.
Titled Pokémon: Wild Card, the film was announced Sunday during the closing ceremony of the 2026 Pokémon World Championships in San Francisco.
Pokémon Company President and CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara said the film’s main character is a Pokémon Trading Card Game player who is striving to become a champion.
A teaser for the animated feature was also unveiled at the event. It offers a first look at the protagonist, who wears a yellow hoodie inspired by Mimikyu. The teaser says the film is “coming 2027 and beyond,” suggesting that further details and projects may follow.
Katsuhiko Kitada is directing the film, with Akemi Hayashi handling character designs. Story Inc. is producing the movie, while CloverWorks is responsible for animation.
The previous Pokémon feature, Pokémon the Movie: Secrets of the Jungle, was released in Japan in 2020 and in the United States in 2021.
The franchise will also return to television in 2027 with Pokémon: The Misadventures of Sirfetch’d and Pichu, which is scheduled to debut on Disney+ and Disney XD.
