Argentine football legend Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to his illustrious 21-year career with the national team.
The 39-year-old confirmed the decision on Monday, saying it was painful but that he believed it was the right time to step away. Messi made the announcement after Argentina’s 1-0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
Messi represented Argentina in 207 matches and scored 125 goals, making him the country’s most-capped player and all-time leading scorer. He played in six World Cups, winning the 2022 tournament in Qatar and finishing runner-up in 2014 and 2026.
During his international career, Messi also guided Argentina to Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024. His journey with the national team began in 2005, and after years of disappointment, he finally led Argentina to major international glory.
Messi said he was proud of everything he had achieved with Argentina and expressed gratitude to his teammates, coaches and supporters. He is expected to continue his club career with Inter Miami.
